While stories of the powerful are sometimes intriguing, those told - TopicsExpress

While stories of the powerful are sometimes intriguing, those told by common men often surprise me just as much. This morning I heard a story from someone who has walked these twin ends and who today, is both common and powerful. I sat next to Jericho at the opening of a BPO facility in the Iloilo Business Park and listened to him recount his trek up the corporate ladder. The story began with a failed family business that forced him to become a working student as a college freshman at U.P. Manila. Jericho took up Development Studies as a pre-law major, thinking that becoming a lawyer was his ticket out and up. But law school did not materialize and he ended up working for a top real estate company right after college. After a handful of years he was hired by Mr. Andrew Tan of Megaworld fame, a man who would serve as his boss and mentor for the next two decades. Jericho helped pioneer the township development model that turned Megaworld into the property giant that it is today. In June of this year, Megaworld earmarked P230B for their projects over the next five years. Presently, Mr. Jericho Go sits as Senior Vice President of the company and right hand man to the third richest individual in the country. It wasnt just his swim out of dire straits that I found remarkable; its that at the heart of his work, he found his lifes mission. Megaworld (and its subsidiaries) is one of the largest employers in the country, and is currently the biggest landlord to the nations booming BPO sector. He was given many opportunities to go abroad long before he became wildly successful, but he turned them all down. I love my country, he said. And that, I felt, was a story worth sharing.
