While the Nigeria-Biafra War raged, Nigeria and her allies led by Britain debated whether humanitarian agencies like Red Cross will be allowed to feed the Biafran civilians who were starving because of the success Nigerian land, sea and air blockage of Biafra. In the meantime, children my age were dying in huge numbers a slow death of starvation (the worst kind of death). Many of our parents watched their precious ones die slowly as they carried them around. Some of the children who were critically ill with marasmus or kwashiorkor were airlifted unaccompanied by a parent to Feeding Centers in Ivory Coast, Gabon and São Tomé. Many died, some survived and were returned to Nigeria in 1970. However, a good number with incomplete biodata were left behind in these host countries.
