While the cause of promoting a green lifestyle may in theory be noble, the math and the science just isnt there to support it. Essentially, Obama wants America to go into competition in manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines against the Chinese who have a much looser labor market and substantially lower costs. This is a rookie business mistake and a mistake someone who was more schooled in American industry would not have made. Solar and green energy companies are tanking right and left as their competition is trouncing them in labor costs and billions, perhaps trillions, of US taxpayer dollars with it. Worse, the science just isnt there to support that sort of industrial shift. Solar panels and other forms of green energy do not have the efficiency or power output of fossil fuel forms of energy and are more expensive to boot. To convert our nation to only 30% of our imported oil costs is mathematically impossible, from both a cost and logistical standpoint. You could cover the entire nation from top to bottom with solar panels and it would barely make a dent in our imported oil costs. The EPA stepped up regulation of coal, oil and nuclear options in an effort to supposedly make the environment cleaner and increase costs to shift more of the burden to alternative fuels in a form of failed social engineering. The net result has been disastrous—homeowner electric bills have skyrocketed as energy companies struggled to pay for the upkeep of the electrical grids that have standing maintenance costs whether they were being used at full capacity or not. Energy producing companies are facing increased costs of regulation and green policies, and do not have the cash or ability to upgrade and add on more power plants, thus putting our energy future at risk. The population is still growing, but housing and energy is not growing with it. The net result is higher bills, slower growth and economic ennui. Investing in green research is a wise decision but investing in green production is financial suicide. People that are spending hundreds (if not thousands a month) just to heat their homes and get to work don’t have the money to spend at movies, bowling alleys and restaurants, or buy new dishwashers and toasters. This has decidedly lowered state tax bases and is forcing people to live a lower standard of living.
