While there may be some inconsistencies between the metaphysical ideas The Underachievers are wishing to share/spread alongside other recurring lyrical themes so far into their brief-yet-prolific body of work (the herbs and psychedelics play a role in the message, so thats not where I feel there might be subconscious friction), the talent and commitment AK and Issa Gold have shown is very impressive. So many members of the NY groups getting associated with Beast Coast (The members of UA, Flatbush Zombies, and Pro Era are all friends who live w/i spitting distance, and Bishop Nehru shows many of the same traits though so far no formal mentions from either party... the connection s gonna seem even more natural after his collab with Doom drops this month!) are surprisingly young for the goals theyve set for themselves, studying ancestral knowledge and understanding it enough to begin identifying and to breaking through the symbols of limitation/boundaries/sleepy restraint that surround us everyday. Issa Gold has stated that it was strictly for the communication of such that led him to study his art and practice it. Id say that hes done damn well so far at 23yrs old... If the pursuit of wisdoms his game, heres to the beginning of his story!The music carries a psychedelic tone throughout, though sometimes more in the form of a re-envisioned Native Tongues vibe for a new age and sometimes with a more aggressive ear toward the forward. Aspects of thick electronic shadow and dubby reverb carry some heavy atmospherics for some of the strongest trax from Flatbush Zombies as well as The Underachievers... Got a bit swept up, it seems. BTW, both members released solo EP/ mixtapes so closely prior to the actual album that it seems to be a counterproductive overkill move, but take em in a bit slower than usual I guess and hopefully theyre both solid profles of each separate character (Im taking em in later this week).
