While we Americans are out there enjoying this summer holiday, having cookouts, swimming and throwing the Frisbee, and perhaps also remembering those men and women that gave so much for their country, perhaps we should also take time to pay tribute to those other overlooked heroes, our “research” monkeys that have also given their lives and have suffered, supposedly for the greater good of we human beings. This should also be a Memorial Day for all the lab monkeys (and other animals), none of whom had the choice of volunteering for medical duty, not necessarily for the betterment of mankind, but because a lot of us thought this was the only way to improve our own lives. Not to mention those who have suffered for our mere entertainment and enjoyment, or to become surrogate children for the barren and needy. Therefore I give my heartfelt thanks to all those unknown and forgotten primates and others, and the lucky ones Jungle Friends has rescued, and pledge to make their lives better and work to eliminate the need for such sacrifice.
