Whirligig Wednesday with Whinny! Did you know that American and English carousels, although very similar, also have some major differences between them? Take a look at these two photos and see if you notice the biggest difference! Feel like your head is spinning in two directions? Could be! And here is why: American carousels spin counter-clockwise, while English carousels spin clockwise. There are many theories as to "why" it is this way. The most accepted theory has to do with the rounding boards atop the spinning ride. English round boards often have writing on them. Since we read left to right, the clockwise spinning allows an onlooker to read the words spinning on the top. On American carousels, one will usually only find pictures. Spinning counter-clockwise, one would get DIZZY reading any writing as it spun backwards! Goodness! Still puzzled? Come on by the Carousel Museum for a demonstration! And let your tour guide know that Whinny sent you!
