White terrorism against Blacks in Evansville, IN. The Social Gospel in Black and White relates that Evansville riot, 7/6/1903. Mob tried to get all 16 inmates of the jail, to lynch them all. 200 deputies and militia held them off, killed 10 mob members. The mob then attacked the black community, forced many of Evansvilles 8,000 blacks to flee to KY and IL. [This implies (a) that the militia and deputies did nothing to protect the black community, even though they were so numerous. (b) nearby towns offered no havens.
