Who is Michael Freedom Carter? Part 10 Have you smoked with Jack Herer? In 1994 my friends built a gas mask pipe, that held about four grams in it. I had just turned sixteen and we were headed to Gas Works Park here in WA, for the Seattle Hempfest. I had a goal of walking around and letting people try the gas mask out, with hopes they would hook me up with whatever remained in the bowl...... it was a well played plan! :) I walked around the festival for awhile letting people randomly give the gas mask a blast and finishing what remained......... until the Cheerios boxes came out... or were they Lucky Charms. I dont remember. My thoughts were a little clouded by this point. Soon these freedom fighters dispersed through the crowd with cereal boxes and they began tossing out handfuls of prerolls, randomly into the crowd...... only if if you were sitting on the ground. They would skip the people that wanted to stand and catch them all. No greed allowed. :) I watched the bands play for awhile until I heard Jack Herer was under the stage and he was filling peoples pipes for free. I took the gas mask down with me, excited to make history. Sure enough, theres Jack Herer sitting at the head of this large table, like the King he was to many of us in the movement. The table had pipes lined up in a row in front of Jack. He would talk to everyone as he filled each pipe on the table, before he held it in the air for the owner to grab. I set the gas mask on the table in line with the rest. Everyones eyes were immediately drawn to the large WW2 style military gas mask, on the table next to their small metal pipes, including Jacks. He asked me to bring it up to him to look at. He examined it for a moment then held it up for everyone to see and exclaimed to the crowd, Look at what the youth of our generation has created..... He was excited about the connection between a tool for war, being converted to a tool for peace. He asked if I would let someone in the crowd try it..... I dont think he felt comfortable giving a sixteen year old herb. Jack packed the bowl tight and everyone watched as one of the gentleman standing next to him tried it. Everyone cheered and I was handed a full bowl surrounded by smiling faces and pats on the back. There was so much more to that day. However that was the peak of the experience. Michael Freedom Carter
