Who is this Painter ? Born on July 22, 1937 in Addis Ababa, at the time one & half years after the second Italo-Abyssinian war. His Mother W/o Tsedale Wolde Tekle, ( ወ/ሮ ፀዳለ ወልደተክሌ ) was Ethiopian. His Father, Kosrof Gorgorios Boghossian, was a colonel in the kebur Zebegna ( ክቡር ዘበኛ ) Imperial Bodyguard & of Armenian descent. Kosrofs father, Gregorios Boghossian, an Armenian trader , had established a friendship with Emperor Menelik ll & worked as an traveling ambassador in Europe on behalf of the Emperor. Boghossians father was active in the resistance against the Italian occupation & was Imprisoned for several years. * Alexander Skunder Boghossian * He attended a traditional Church school ( ቄስ ትምህርት ቤት ) where he was taught the Geez script. Alexander won second prize at the Jubilee Anniversary Celebration of Haile Selassie I in 1954. The next year he was granted a scholarship which allowed him to study in Europe. He spent two years in London, working at St. Martins School, the Central School, & the Slade School. He then spent nine years studying & teaching at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. In 1966 he returned home, teaching at Addis Ababas School of Fine Arts until 1969. In 1970 he emigrated to the United States, teaching at Howard University from 1972 until 2001. Alexander was the first contemporary African artist to have his work purchased by the Musee dArt Moderne in Paris in 1963 & the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. In 1977, he became the first African to design a First Day Cover for a United Nations stamp. He was commissioned by the World Federation of United Nations Associations. Alexander S Boghossian has two children. Aida Mariam & Edward Addisu. Alexander S Boghossian died on May 4, 2003 at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. He was 65. .
