Why Bonnie Should Stay Dead In the upcoming episode of The Vampire Diaries (Season 5, Episode 6: “Handle With Care”), the fang gang is full speed ahead with their plan to bring Bonnie (Kat Graham) back from ghost world using Silas as a willing sacrifice — but, do we want them to? Sure, it’s been torture to see Bonnie and Jeremy make eyes at one another without being able to touch, but that doesn’t mean we’re willing to accept a take-back on Bonnie’s death. Here’s why! Wasted Potential We were cautiously excited to see the Ghost Bonnie storyline prior to the start of Season 5 and, so far, it’s been kind of dull. No spying on people to report back to her friends and no scaring unsuspecting Mystic Falls residents a la Paranormal Activity. Bonnie has yet to even get her own storyline as a ghost. She spends all of her time lurking creepily in the background of other characters’ scenes. We’re not necessarily for Bonnie staying dead forever, but this storyline is going to feel like a mondo waste if Bonnie is returned back to the land of the living without having even scared one Mystic Falls resident. Higher Stakes On the other hand, maybe Bonnie should stay dead forever… This show has teased us again and again with tragic deaths that turn out to be temporary. In the moment, we’re usually happy to have our beloved character back, but every time the show doesn’t follow through with the threat of permanent death, it loses a bit of dramatic weight. If we’re not afraid of what will happen to our favorite characters, then there’s no suspense, no stakes, no drama. We think it’s worth permanently killing off a beloved character every once in a while if it means keeping the quality of the show high. Silas as Villain Bonnie’s resurrection is tied in with Silas’ death. The 2,000-year-old witch accepted Damon and Elena’s help getting the cure (aka Katherine) in exchange for a swap: Silas for Bonnie. Silas gets to die, reuniting with his one true love, Amara. And the TVDers get their friend back. Here’s the thing: if this happens without so much as a double-cross from Silas’ character, then his entire character arc as villain is going to be kind of anticlimactic. We suppose there is some room on this show for moral ambiguity (after all, the last batch of villains just got their own show), but we don’t think this even gels with Silas’ character. This is the dude that tricked Qetsiyah into falling in love with him to get the Immortality Spell. Also the dude who trapped his doppelganger in a vault at the bottom of a quarry to perpetually drown for an entire summer. He doesn’t seem the type to let anyone but himself get what he wants. Do you think Bonnie should come back to life? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below! Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, November 7 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. (katerina)
