Why Ive changed my avatar for the weekend: 1. DC does not have any representation in the U.S. Senate. 2. Upon taking power in 2011, Republicans in the House of Representatives stripped DCs delegate of the ability to vote with the Committee of the Whole, leaving DC without a vote on legislation passed by the house. 3. Monies raised by DC income and sales taxes are considered part of the federal budget, and must be reappropriated back to DC by Congress. What this means for my life is that when the federal government shuts down without a budget, my garbage collection and other local services stop until Congress gets its act together. 4. Every law passed by the DC City Council is subject to review and possible rejection by Congress, regardless of the desires of the local citizens. 5. Congress has the ability to pass laws that affect only DC, and has done so to impose pet projects like school vouchers. No official elected by the citizens of DC has the ability to vote for or against such legislation. 6. DC has a population that is larger than Vermont and Wyoming. 7. As of 2011, DC residents paid more in federal taxes than 14 states. 8. Like DC, the 5 inhabited U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa) do not have full votes in Congress. Unlike DC, they do not pay federal personal income taxes. #DCflagdayfacts
