Why I’m running for NeuRA “I have had the pleasure of working in the tourist park industry for the past 14 years and was located in sunny Carnarvon in the north-west of WA. We have the same regular guests, in differing stages of their well earned retirement. They come every year for our warm weather and dry days. They book the same site, with simular dates annually and over time they become family. We swap stories as we back their vans on or as they come into the reception to collect their mail and over the years a strong bond forms. As comes with age so too does the instance of disease and sadly we have had many of our winter visitors diagnosed, and then suffer, and decline from diseases such as dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Because I only see them once a year for 12 weeks what I really notice when they return every year is the level of their decline. These wonderful people who have contributed their part, raised children, worked hard, built homes and struggled at times, are now trying to enjoy their well earned retirement as grandparents. These diseases do not allow them to achieve this goal and year by year they can often rapidly decline in function and mental alertness. They can’t remember why they came to the office to see me, or no longer can they back their van on, or they shake so much they need a wheel chair to go from one end of the park to the other. Fortunately these special people are also tough too so continue to return year after year with their husband or wife as their carer. They look forward to returning to the North West sun for winters and we too look forward to seeing them.” Liz Watts
