Why Liverpool would be wasting their time trying to find the new Steven Gerrard Forget about replacing Steven Gerrard. It’s not happening. As much as they’d sooner have ignored it, Liverpool have known for some time Gerrard was going to be hanging up his boots soon. There’s never a good time to leave. But there is always a right time, and Gerrard has chosen well. Liverpool aren’t going to be able to sign a ready-made replacement. That’s not only impossible – Gerrard is unique – but it would be a massive millstone around the neck of anybody the Reds did sign. They probably wouldn’t have a hope. In truth, we’ve been trying for some time to find a way of coping with life after Gerrard. A change of system is needed The cameras will be sniffing an upset when Liverpool turn up at AFC Wimbledon tomorrow night. But if the Reds keep their heads, there shouldn’t be a problem. Their win over Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup underlined the gulf in class there was between the Premier League and the rest. And Wimbledon are two divisions lower than Bournemouth. Sure, they will be physical and target Simon Mignolet. But the Dons should not be much of a problem. Certain players have come and gone, certain youngsters have shone brightly then disappeared. But it will most likely involve a change of system, rather than merely the introduction of one new player. It’ll probably be two or three new players, reminiscent of when Ian Rush left in 1987 and we brought in Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and John Aldridge. You have to feel a bit for Brendan Rodgers, who has lost Jamie Carragher, Luis Suarez and now Gerrard in successive years. What’s more, he has had to manage both Carragher and Gerrard on the way down in their careers, not at their peak. It’s a tough one for Rodgers. Replacing one of those players would be a tough ask, but he’s having to cope with all three. And with Gerrard on his way, a main reason for players moving to Anfield will be departing along with the skipper. Echo/lawro
