Why Soapstone? Let’s take a look at why this remarkable natural stone is so popular and a favorite countertop material of top chefs. Soapstone is incredibly low-maintenance and will develop a beautiful patina as it ages. Denser than granite, it is completely nonporous and does not need to be sealed. Instead of a stone sealer, mineral oil is applied to enhance the beauty of the stone and to help give a uniform appearance to the surface. Soapstone is chemically inert and therefore will not react to acidic substances. It also is not affected by extreme temperatures so, unlike with other materials, it’s ok to put hot pans directly on the countertop. The one drawback to soapstone is that due to the relatively high talc content, it is softer than quartz and other natural stones. However, should the countertop get scratched, it’s actually a very simple process to repair – just sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper, apply a light coat of mineral oil, and your countertops are as good as new.
