Why are some people – especially those from the Subcontinent background – obsessed with light skin and fair complexion?! Some even spend huge amounts on creams and other methods to lighten up their face. I have sadly heard people making negative remarks about their own children because they have a relatively darker skin, A’udhu billah!! And when it comes to marriage, rather than seeing whether the prospective spouse’s heart is white or black, the focus sometimes is all on the colour of their skin. I feel for some of our sisters who lose confidence and have an inferiority complex just because they have a darker skin, and thus they think they will be rejected. This is a result of a culture and society which is guilty of racism without even realizing that it is racist! This attitude needs to be shunned and challenged in an uncompromising way. As for those who feel inferior due to their skin colour, understand that there is NO blemish in having a darker skin. Both light and dark skin colours are beautiful manifestations of Allah’s creation. There are many amazing people out there who actually prefer darker skin, so do not feel sorry about yourself. Moreover, beauty is not merely in the colour of one’s skin, eyes or hair; it goes much beyond that. “Indeed Allah does not look at your bodies and your forms, but He looks at your hearts and your actions”, said the Prophet (peace be upon him).
