Why cant we live in peace with those species we share this planet with? Humans come in and clear cut the forests, build roads, extensively extract any fossil fuels that can be found, hunt, quad and run tens of thousands of cattle on our crown land and then blame environmental degradation on 853 wild horses. They claim the wildies eat all of the grass meant for cattle and wildlife, so they cull the wild horses and move elk into the area to make the hunters happy. Then when the elk population increases they cull the elk. The wolves are then blamed for a decline in wild ungulate populations, so of course they then must cull the wolves to keep nature in balance. This is nothing but insanity being used to justify the decimation of any perceived competition for our ruthless exploitation of natural resources. And you can be sure the rancher quoted would kill the gophers as well.
