Why do companies offer lease purchase programs? They would like to have you believe its for your freedom, the chance to make a little more money. The truth is because it saves them A LOT OF MONEY! Let me break it down for you, most companies offer you about 95 cents to a buck plus FSC (usually another quarter a mile or so). As a company guy you were running about 35 to 45 cpm. Fuel is about 60-70 cpm, your truck payment depending on what you get 20-30 cpm, your maintenance you should be putting back for break downs at least 12-15 cpm, and other costs in the 4-8cpm range. You go with the high side on all of that your at $1.23 per mile operating costs. How much does that leave for you to take home? And now that your a lease operator, your company no longer pays workers compensation, they no longer pay into unemployment insurance if you lose your job. The buck is all passed to you. And your going to be self employed now? Higher tax bracket, self employment taxes. Etc, and so on and so forth. There is great money out here, sure, but its not pulling for any of these big carriers. They dont haul cheap, why should you? Call Schneider Logistics and see how much it costs to ship some freight. Usually $3.50 a mile. How much of that pie are you getting? A minimal amount for your effort, after all, without you that freight isnt going anywhere. Know how much it costs to operate this equipment, most likely, you cant afford that new truck.
