Why do they hunt? When I was a kid looking at pictures of National Geographic and World magazines, I was moved by the photos of animals killed by game hunters. I felt the same about hunters in general, but even though I did not like seeing pictures of deer, elk, fowl, etc. killed by hunters, I did understand that they were being used for food and parts. It was the trophy hunting that I could not understand. I wanted to hunt those people. I would see photos of animals killed by men, and now women, and tried to understand who that person was, what they were like, what drove them to commit a premeditated, well planned and expensive act of killing a beautiful, innocent, unaware animal. Why were they all dressed like they were playing safari? They looked like people who had something to prove to the world. Youth has the luxury of naïveté. I would see those photos and think only a few people were capable of such depravity. I knew there were people who would kill any type of animal, but I thought for sure that they were an insignificant number of people and would never pose a threat to a species. 30 some years later, I have become aware of just how naïve I was. Some people live to hunt, live to kill. They love doing it. As I look online at pictures of animals from around the world, there are always photos of game hunters posing with their kills for nearly every type of animal there is. I am not even talking about the poaching aspect, just plain trophy hunters. I look into the eyes of dogs and cats and I see the same eyes that I see in the photos of the hunted animals. I watch how my dogs run around outside, inspect their surroundings, chase a bird, and play with each other, and I see innocence. That same innocence is found in every living creature, it is the innocence of pure existence. Every bird, animal, cetacean, etc are born into the world today with the same innocence they were hundreds of thousands of years ago. They are born and live only in accordance with their nature. They do only that which they know to do. As I tried to understand the life of the hunter, I did the same with animals. They wake everyday, they graze, forage, or hunt. I would look into the eyes of an impala and think about its life. It did nothing but live. It eats throughout the day. Some bird may land on it and pick off some bugs. It drank where there was water. I look into those eyes and I see a hundred-thousand years ago. I see beauty, innocence, perhaps god. The hunter looks into the eye and pulls the trigger
