Pastor: 26-Minute Ohio Execution Was Evil Pastor Lawrence Hummer witnessed the state of Ohios execution of Dennis McGuire, which took an exceptionally long 26 minutes and has been called cruel and unusual punishment. He was fighting for breath, and I could see both of his fists were clenched the entire time. His gasps could be heard through the glass wall that separated us. Towards the end, the gasping faded into small puffs of his mouth. It was much like a fish lying along the shore puffing for that one gasp of air that would allow it to breathe. Time dragged on and I was helpless to do anything, sitting helplessly by as he struggled for breath. Capital punishment in the USA is routinely misrepresented as an argument between people who want order vs. criminals and weak people. The real argument against capital punishment is that only a completely deluded populace would trust the people who masquerade behind the auspices of the state with the power of life and death. The statistical reality upon further review, often 50 years after the fact(dna evidence, etc) is that a ton of executions in the USA are due to fraud (lying prosecutors/falsified evidence/etc) which bears out the point.
