“Why does Anderson hate White River?” Where is the beautiful boulder-strewn river in this video? The Ozarks? Northern Michigan? Nope, this is our White River near Daleville between Anderson and Muncie. With over 90% of the original forest gone from the central till plain of Indiana, this forested riparian corridor is a refuge for our flora and fauna as well as an outstanding source of renewal for the citizens that use it for recreation. Yet, thirty years after the era of dam building ended, politicians and businessmen in Anderson have proposed the destruction of this corridor in an apparent attempt to brand Anderson as the most backward community in the United States. If the proposed Mounds Reservoir were built, this location at the inflow end would be buried under tons of sediment eroded from the largely agricultural watershed. This real-estate scheme to further enrich a few wealthy Anderson families would impoverish the lives of thousands of east-central Indiana residents that value the existing river corridor as their recreational playground. During a recent email exchange with an acquaintance in Noblesville also opposed to the reservoir, he asked “Why does Anderson hate White River?”. A good question! An even better question might be “Why does Anderson think the free-flowing river, 1/3 of Mounds State Park, and Mounds Fen Nature Preserve are theirs to destroy?” These natural treasures belong to all Indiana residents, not the vested interested supporting this boondoggle. Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith has recently been promoting the reservoir on his weekly radio show and during a visit to Washington DC. Please take the time to email Mayor Smith and tell him to move into the 21st century by preserving White River through the alternative Mounds Greenway proposal that would protect the free-flowing river and the forested corridor. mayor@cityofanderson I especially implore our friends of the river from outside of Anderson to express their opposition. As stated above, the White River and its natural treasures belong to all Indiana residents. Many of us that live in the Anderson area consider the free-flowing White River, Mounds State Park and the Rangeline mountain bike park to be our community’s best assets. Please share if you agree.
