Why is this happening? As we all know this year monsoon seems on - TopicsExpress

Why is this happening? As we all know this year monsoon seems on a devastation spree in north India. Landslides & floods claimed over 60 lives. There has been a huge loss in terms of property; flash floods destroyed around 164 buildings. All we know is- it’s a lot. Time to time, humanity is witnessing act of God. Is this always supposed to be like this? Are we paying the price for development & luxuries? But the irony here is that the people who are the cause are not suffering the effect. Poor people who in any case are not related to these things are having a hard time. Because of this conflict, we for simplicity will not consider the responsible people differently. Let us take humanity as whole, without differentiations. For the reasoning of these disasters, let us take a very popular opinion in economics & geography. Don’t be scared it is a very simple concept. Simplicity is one of the reasons that it is still remembered by the people who are not in touch with the subjects. So, this guy Thomas Malthus (again very famous in economics & geography) said that, which I suppose is also true. Population grows like 1, 2, 4, 8,16,32,64.......... & so on, it doubles. Food on the other hand grows like 1, 2,3,4,5........& so on, it adds on one unit every time. This tells us that population grows faster than food, which is necessary for survival. There is imbalance in the whole equation. So, here Malthus says, in order to maintain the balance, nature by itself corrects the equation using disaster as a tool. That according to this theory means disaster is simply balancing by nature. Now, we can also consider a very traditional reasoning, which is present in several mythologies. That disaster is a punishment by Gods on humans. For their bad deeds, their disrespect to Gods & so on. In case of disaster by river Ganga it somewhat fits. Ganga being a holy river, still takes in a lot of dirt, chemicals, sewage waste, dead bodies, ashes, rotten flowers & garlands & what not. So when we say Ganga as a river & Goddess is destroying, it seems like she is punishing us, for not taking proper care of her, for polluting her. It seems that she is angry. She gave us enough time to correct our mistakes, but we didn’t do anything. & finally she lost her cool. There is one more reasoning for the topic, which I guess would make more sense than the above mentioned. Ecological imbalance, yes the most sought after appropriate reasoning, I gave a hint about it in the beginning of this article though. Because of the Ozone depletion, green house effect, global warming, melting of ice near the poles & several such terms this is happening. It is happening as we are using more resources than required. But one thing is common in all the reasons, be it Malthus, Gods or Ecological. We are responsible, so we should be responsible. #uttarakhand #opinion #floods #india
