Why should their economy have to grow? Especially given that so - TopicsExpress

Why should their economy have to grow? Especially given that so many of the jobs in our economy today are violating the rights of others and destroying the planet? Our priorities are completely screwed up. The lifestyles of these people should be facilitated- its great for human rights, and its great for the planet, BUT this kind of thing is being actively prevented from occurring for so many people in the world today. It is being prevented by real people, and it really is being prevented by the 1%. Most of us in societies like Australia and the US are unfortunately complicit. This kind of lifestyle is a basic human right! Not to be forced on people, of course, but for all who want it. James Patton says: Mr. Stamatis Moraitis died at 102 - 36 years after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. A remarkable man, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1976. Given nine months to live, he decided to economize on his own funeral. In the U.S., he figured it would cost $2,000 to put him in the ground. In his native Greece, on the other hand, he could be planted for less than $200. So he went home to the little Greek island of Ikaria, They spend their days in the sun and their nights in merriment. They grow their own food, dance, socialise, make and drink their own wine. They beat cancer. And they seem to live a long time; Ikaria has one of the highest concentrations of 100-year-olds in the world. But their economy is not growing. Poor bastards.
