Widely known for his vocal and lyrical work in bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan has interacted with many artistic instrumentalists throughout his career. Namely the artists from Tool, a progressive rock band originating in Los Angeles, California which is characterized by dark melodic tones, disturbing visuals, and a critique on modern society and self thats reminiscent of 20th century expressionism. These artists, responsible for creating the emotional foundation for the song, form an element of interaction with the lyricist, who forms a personal, internal representation as a response and in so doing, brings forth certain memories and experiences that he then expresses artistically. Through this process, the emotions and memories presented are analyzed thoroughly and then recorded in his lyrics. This allows him to open up by reenacting them as a form of (intentional or unintentional) therapy. Much like those who play the drums or the guitar are consciously or subconsciously playing out their inner thoughts and emotions. By putting these ideas into a more literal context through heavy self analysis, Maynard creates elaborate metaphors that others can experience allowing them to realize certain similarly related events of their own. The result is one of the most captivating and moving bands of all time with pure emphasis on self analysis, experimentation and enlightenment. A sound enveloping a single idea creating an anthropomorphic experience. The music, a cohesive entity inheriting a consciousness conjoined by four intrinsic vantages: the drummer, the guitarist, the bassist and the singer. Many bands have specific songs that have great meaning. Tool is one of the very few bands Ive ever listened to that tells such an intense, confused and gripping story, all the way from the first song debut (cold and ugly, 1991), to the last (Viginti Tres, 2006). 15 years of songs that equate to one story: The human experience.
