Wildflower Alert, April 2014 Are you ready for spring? It’s been a long time coming, but now it is here, and the so-called “spring ephemeral” woodland wildflowers will soon be evident throughout the Arboretum, especially in the area above the rail-trail and below the steep hillside. Early-season wildflowers have been delayed by our wintry March. The lovely white flowers of bloodroot should be easy to find through the middle of April or even later this year. Virginia bluebells, dwarf larkspur, trilliums, and other mid-season wildflowers are right on schedule, with the peak of their bloom anticipated in mid- to late April. Visiting botanists have declared the Arboretum’s spring ephemeral displays “unsurpassed.” Come see for yourself. The WVU Department of Biology invites persons who would like a free, guided tour to come at 2:00 PM April 13, 20, or 27. No reservations are needed. Wildflower walks at 2:00 on the last three Sundays in April are a WVU tradition dating back more than fifty years.
