Meet at 9.30 at Parc Slip Visitor Centre to share cars and to receive details of the parking arrangements in Merthyr. Wear walking boots and suitable outdoor clothing. Bring your own refreshments. Finish by about 1 pm. Saturday 27th July Coach Outing to Mid-Wales to visit Cors Caron NNR in the morning and the National Wool Museum in the afternoon. Prior booking essential. Contact the Group Secretary for full details and for booking forms. August No events __________________________ PLEASE NOTE: All indoor meetings will now be held in the Visitor Centre at Parc Slip. The Tea Room will be open from 6.30 pm for the sale of beverages and light refreshments – and for a chat beforehand. Meetings will officially begin at 7.30 pm and will usually end by 9.00 pm. [but note: 7.15 pm start in September for the AGM]. There will be an entry charge of £1 to cover Group expenses. __________________________ Monday 2nd September 7.15 pm Group AGM This is an annual chore, but we always keep the proceedings as brief as possible – and we always ask for some fresh helpers on the Committee…. 7.30 pm Wildlife Through the Camera (1) Waxcaps, Birds’ Nest, Apricot Clubs Phil Blanning A photographic exploration of the weird and wonderful world of fungi. (2) Wildlife of Croatia Margaret & John Samuel A holiday exploration off the beaten track in eastern Europe Monday 7th October One Man’s Perspective of the Badger Martin Jones No, this isn’t another protest meeting about the badger cull – just an account of a naturalist’s lifelong encounters with badger, including observations of badger setts, concerns about badger digging and snaring, and experiences of badger relocation. If you have never seen a badger close up, Martin will bringing a real one (stuffed) plus various artefacts collected from his explorations. Monday 4th November CLAWS – the Ecological Impact of an Alien Invader Dr Roy Wiles It’s all about the Signal Crayfish, the American alien that has taken over our waterways, displacing our native crayfish. Our speaker is from the University of Glamorgan and is an expert on freshwater life. [Meeting postponed from the spring programme] Monday 2nd December Members’ Evening This been a feature of the Group’s programme from the outset – but it will be the first in our new location. As ever, we ask members to speak for a few minutes about wildlife or any matters environmental, with or without illustrations. As ever, we ask you to bring some mince pies or other festive nibbles to share, and we will provide a mini-bar to celebrate the occasion. Saturday 7th December Christmas Lunch – and Morning Stroll This event has always been popular with numbers steadily increasing over the years. However, this time we will be venturing out of the Vale and going to the historic Prince of Wales pub at Kenfig. The dining room upstairs is a magnificent atmospheric place. We will be seated like burgesses at the long table in the old guildhall, now known as the town hall. Prior booking is essential as ever.
