William Carrick took a picture of this abacus seller in his St Petersburg studio. From the court of the Romanovs to another Russia—the real Russia. It’s humbling to reflect that just seventy years later, these people will have built Russia into a military and industrial superpower. First, however, they had to make a revolution (1917); then defend it in a civil war fomented by foreign powers (1918-24); then industrialize (1930s); and finally save itself and Europe from Nazis (1940-45). These photographs pay tribute to the people of Russia and the Soviet Union. Remarkable pictures show the lives of ordinary Russian living in the 1800s. Edinburgh-born artist William Carrick was born on New Years Eve in 1827 and months later was taken to Russia where he grew up. He studied painting at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts and in Rome.
