Wines of Argentina in China: Lucky enough to be invited to a tasting of 35 wines being considered by the Wines of Argentina team here -- thanks Andrew and Sherry! -- for education purposes. The reds were pretty much delicious across the board, the kind of bottled sunshine (fruit!) with an ample body and soft tannins many of the consumers I know would enjoy. The whites were less impressive, not because Argentina isnt able to make good ones, but because the ones we had werent the best Ive tried. Anyway, I later took six bottles, including some that I liked best, to a couple of Beijing venues -- Groovy Schillers and La Cava -- to try with the owners and customers. In general, people gravitated toward the two Malbecs -- either the big juicy Primus and the more elegant Angelica Zapata. I also liked the Lagarde Cabernet Franc very much: in fact, Ive pretty much enjoyed every Argentine Cabernet Franc Ive tried! The other wines I enjoyed a great deal but didnt have room to take on a pub crawl were the ones pictured from Zuccardi and Susana Balbo. Overall, a fantastic tasting that again affirmed to me these wines are a good match for this -- and probably any -- market.
