With all this rain we’ve been getting lately, be sure to watch your plants closely for signs of root rot. If the soil is moist to the touch, and the leaves have started to wilt or yellow, you probably have root rot. Root rot is actually a fungus that is growing on the roots of your plants. It’s the result of the roots of your plant being submerged under water for several hours, which means you have a drainage problem. With smaller plants, remove the plant from ground and spray off all the dirt from the roots. Remove any roots that look diseased or dead. Then, remove as much dirt from the hole as you can, and replace with new dirt, or potting soil. Replant the plant in the new dirt making sure this time that the dirt slopes away from base of the plant so that water can’t pool at the base. For larger plants that are not easily removed, be sure to call a professional landscaping company like Outdoor Development that can help you assess the plant damage and provide a plan to solve your drainage issues.
