Dear Friends and Family, As many of you know, my sister, - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends and Family, As many of you know, my sister, Mayela, is currently volunteering for Peace Corps in Cameroon. Its because of the amazing things that she has been doing in Cameroon, that she has inspired us to make a small contribution to her efforts. Therefore as sisters we have created a charity, Palanca Project, to support the projects that she has started. Please check it out and like us on FB! facebook/palancaproject We have had a few challenges in getting thru all of the paperwork and bureaucracy, and with the current challenges in Cameroon this has not been an easy task. However in the interest of time, we’ve decided to start inviting people to support our cause, and focusing our energy on the projects at hand. Sonia will be traveling to Cameroon this weekend, June 28th, and already taking a great deal of donations, but we are making one final run to Target and Old Navy tomorrow so if you want to pitch in there’s still time, or there’s still time to bring schools supplies or clothes for children. Please contact me at palancaproject@gmail to arrange a drop off in Boston. Here are some of the ongoing projects in Bibemi that Palanca is supporting: 1. University Scholarships for 3 Girls for 2014-2015 School Year Project Description: Aime, Alice, and Chantal are three of the smartest and most charismatic girls I have met. I would like to encourage them to aim higher since they have already put so much effort into making it to 12th grade in a society that is constantly telling them girls education is a waste of time and money. They would not only be the first girls in their families to go to college, but the first in their communities Budget: $100 school fee, $50 books/supplies, $200 lodging, $50 food, and $50-100 misc. Total: $400-500USD/girl per year OR $1200-1500/girl for 3-year college program 2. Model UN Conference May 24 & 25th , 2014 Project description: Maye’s has been teaching Debate classes at the local lycee and organized a Model UN conference May 24-25, 2014 to conclude the class. Debate class has already awoken their interest in social justice, diplomacy, and international relations, but Model UN could help them practice the essential skills of public speaking, persuasion, decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution. 50 youth that have demonstrated exceptional academic work, public speaking talent, and profound interest in the field of international relations will be nominated to participate. 15 will represent the Security Council and the other 35 will represent the African Union. Peace Corps does not provide financing for youth activities that do not involve HIV prevention directly, therefore Maye has searched for financing individually for printing costs, notebooks, pens, folders, badges, pause cafe, lunch, etc. Budget: $50 printing/binding handbook costs, $10 pens, $10 badges, $80 food, $50 water bottles, $50 flags and trophies, $40 participation certificates , $10 misc Total: $300 USD 3.
