With respect to the poster posted to my fb page below about teachers, let me say this. Between 1984 and 2004 I taught in the public system then ran my own school, Star Academy, 2004-2011. In those 27 years I spent THOUSANDS of dollars of my own money decorating my classroom with educational posters, and all other items that would enhance my students learning and comfort, etc, purchased tons of incentives from stickers to certificates to decorative pencils to big prizes to acknowledge academic achievement, purchased breakfasts, lunches, and uniforms (including PE sneakers and shoes) for students whose parents just couldnt so those students would not be hungry in class or ostracized for being scruffy....spent extra money on gas to transport students to all kinds of events.....and the list goes on and on and on! If I had all that money returned to me (inclusive of overtime pay which was nonexistent), Id be financially well off! A trip overseas resulted in at least one full suitcase of stuff for school. Why did I do it? Back in the day it was expected! To ask for reimbursement was a joke! I wanted my students to have the best learning experience possible. I never gave my students a list of items to bring to school as is done in many schools now. I purchased it myself. Gosh now that I think about it I even kept medical products on hand just in case. The late afternoons I stayed behind to prepare for the next day and the countless hours I sat up during the week marking books and grading papers....and the Sundays I spent preparing my classroom for the week ahead: not one red cent of overtime pay! So thats what the poster reminds me of. Being passionate about ones craft causes one to simply do what needs to be done. I dont know of any other profession where employees fork out their personal funds like that to perfect their craft and enhance their working environment.
