With several tribes petitioning parliament and different government departments claiming to have been marginalized, the ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has imparked on documentation of Intangible Cultural Heritages of some of the tribes in Uganda. The Assistant Commissioner in charge of culture in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Ms Eunice Tumwebaze says that the inventory of cultural elements of feared to be facing extinction in the country has started with four tribes. Speaking in Kasese on Monday, Tumwebaze said that the documentation of the intangible cultural heritages has started with the Ik community in Kaboong district, the Acholi in Gulu, Alur in Nebbi and Basongora in Kasese. The inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritages in Uganda is supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Tumwebaze says that since Uganda ratified the international conversion on the preservation of intangible cultural heritages in 2003, it is high time such are documented to make a national inventory of all the cultures. In Kasese, a team of 12 members of the Basongora clan in Kasese are undergoing training at the Rwenzori International Hotel in order to be acquainted with skills of capturing data in order to document all the necessary cultural aspects in their community.
