With the Giants big win I’m thinking of San Francisco tonight, one of my boyhood homes, the home of my recent ancestors, one of my parents, and currently a full contingent of extended family. Even if I don’t live there I will always deeply love The City. With All Hallows Eve at hand I’m reminded of one of the most subtle and deftly created ‘horror’ themed films of all time, Alfred Hitchcock’s stunningly composed and hauntingly directed movie Vertigo, set almost entirely in SF. The bizarre titles and midpoint animation of the main characters nightmare were created by my boyhood design mentor and LA graphics icon Saul Bass, and the score for the film, composed by Bernard Herrmann, is one of the richest and truly spookiest symphonic pieces of music ever written.
