With the continuing coverage of police tactics across this country, I thought should re-share one of my worst expierences as a police officer: FEBRUARY 6, 2007: I found myself involved in a car chase with a subject who had violently kidnapped and beat-up his ex-girlfriend. And little did I know at the time that he was also armed with an assault rifle, which he would draw on me during his attempt to escape. God was with me during this entire ordeal but tragically it ended when this crazed subject crashed into an innocent driver, killing them. And yes, the subject lived. But I remember somewhere doing to chase that I had an opportunity to, for lack of a better word, end it but I followed the departments chase policy to the letter and although I didnt violate any rules it still bothered me that an innocent person lost their life. Im haunted with that night playing through my mind repeatedly: I still see the rage on that subjects face; I still see the carnage he left behind; I still see Sandra Gilmore (the innocent victim) mangled. I still find myself crying about that night. I tried my best to stop him but it wasnt good enough. It still hurts. Cops are put in situations that most people are afraid to even venture and people forget that police officers are ordinary people who are placed into extraordinary complexities. And cops arent going to get it right every time, too many variables prevent that. Just understand that at the end of the day, at the end of the shift, and even at the end of the career those horrific images collected over time are still there and although police officers get a paycheck for their services, living with the nightmares is the price we ultimately pay.
