With the weather starting to warm up, please keep the effects of the heat in mind for your pets when they are outside! Most cases of heat stroke actually occur not in the heat of summer, but usually when temperatures are first starting to get in the 80s/90s. This is because the pets are not acclimated to the rising heat. Make sure your pets have plenty of water and shade when outside, and as a general rule, try to bring your pets inside when the temperatures are high. Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, glassy-eyed appearance, an off-balance or drunk-appearing/stumbling walk, and can progress to unresponsiveness. Pets with heat stroke need to be cooled on site and then brought to the veterinarian for continued care, as secondary problems can include organ and tissue damage.
