Skills and techniques learned: Plants: Foam Flower Compass and map: learned how to shoot an azimuth, parts of a compass, and map reading skills. 5. Crane Mountain hike: Take an easy walk down a quite short path to the registration area. At this point you are given a choice of taking a left red disc marked trail that leads to the Putnam farm, or the red disc path straight ahead that leads to the Crane Mountain Summit. Taking the forward path the trail has a mellow incline for a short distance, watch out for a lot of roots and rocks as you proceed. Hiking on, the trail becomes quite difficult, requiring a good amount of climbing up the rocky side of the mountain, and its very steep. There are a couple of short distances between the rocky hiking parts where you can catch your breath, and be sure to hydrate yourself thoroughly. In a couple of the more difficult sections of the very steep rocky hike you will be aided by two wooden ladders. The first ladder is short, and aids in getting over a good size boulder. The second ladder is tall and helps you get up a greatly steep rocky drop off. After making your way up the very steep rocky part of the hike, the difficulty drops off dramatically, still a little steep but very manageable. Moving onward you will come to a fork in the trail, with a wooden sign giving the choice of taking the left yellow disc marked path to Crane Mountain Pond or the right red disc marked path to the summit. At the top of Crane Mountain you will be at an elevation of 3254 feet and have a great view of Crane Mountain Pond, Indian Lake, and Hadley Mountain. For an interesting adventure, continue hiking the red disc marked path along the summit and you will find a lot of lookouts offering even more picturesque views, the trail will be muddy as you hike onward, definitely watch your footing. As you slowly move to a lower elevation you will work your way to a crown jewel of this hike, the Crane Mountain pond. This body of water is a good size for being considered a pond and feel free to jump in for a relaxing swim. Continuing on the red disc trail you will find that the trail becomes even muddier than before given a good part of the path runs right along the waters edge, watch your step now, even more than before. With the trail finally moving away from the pond you will have to be extremely cautious on the rest of the way, the hike down Crane Mountain is just as hazardous as it was on the way up, very steep and rocky. The red disc trail will turn over to a blue disc marked trail as you hike down further, keep following this new color and after a good distance you will be back on the red path. To find your way back to the registration area just continue on the red trail. The total distance for this hike is 4.7 miles, enjoy.
