Within the Net Shape & Additive Manufacturing (NS&AM) Theme, to act as the lead expert for the MTC research programme in the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) to meet the needs of clients and stakeholders, including sustaining and growing a profitable business for MTC and developing and training its staff. The aim of this area of research is to provide innovative technology in the areas of AM. The Role Within the AM sub team of the Component Technology group, the role will involve acting as the lead AM technology expert, providing state of the art knowledge to: Reporting to the Group Technology Manager - Component Technology the position will lead the technical delivery of ground-breaking projects that meet MTCs quality assurance and health & safety standards; Support and develop new market opportunities for the business; Provide consultancy to manufacturing companies in Additive Manufacturing to discover and market ways in which their processes can be improved; Work with the Technology Director, Chief Technologists, Chief Engineers, Group Technology Managers, Industrial Partnership Managers and the Technology Managers to ensure: Optimised use of resources; Effective delivery of MTC Research Programmes; The companys technology roadmaps are continually evolved; MTCs investments in new technology platforms optimised; Delivery of an order pipeline that grows the AM activity within the MTC; Support Group Technology Managers and Technology Managers in the recruitment and development of staff; Develop & delivery project proposals and develop and review project reports; Pro-actively represent and promote The MTC at national and international forums and in publications associated with AM; Pro-actively engage with academia, particularly the MTC Founder Members, to develop mutually beneficial relationships, win collaborative research projects and keep up to date with low TRL (1-4) technology that is being developed. Responsibilities Lead ground breaking research work focused primarily on the Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) 4-6 Work with the Chief Technologists - Component Technology to identify potential new research areas. Support the preparation of funding proposals (client, EU, UK Government) within AM. Review the experimental methodology applied in projects. Review technical reports. Support the development of proposals for individual research projects to meet clients need in full. Promote MTC capabilities through publications in International Journals and presentations at prestigious conferences, to Professional Bodies and Specialist Interest groups with due consideration of confidentiality requirements associated with particular areas of research / projects. Provide advice and troubleshooting support to all MTC and seconded staff working in AM. Collaborate with co-workers across the Research Partners and Industry Members; Identify and pursue new opportunities for exploitation of research. Follow best practice, in particular in the area of health, safety and environment. The Person You will have an excellent educational profile up to and including first degree and/or Masters in Mechanical/ Manufacturing, Aerospace engineering or Materials based degrees linked to experience of having produced and reviewed technical reports and / or guidance materials on engineering or science topics. Recent experience of successfully managing complex multi partners projects involving a wide range of Additive Manufacturing processes, including Selective Laser Melting / Electron Beam Melting. Track record of having delivered innovative solutions in AM. Pragmatic hands on approach to manufacturing problem solving and excellent written and oral communication skills. Self-motivated with ability to meet deadlines and the ability to work independently and as part of a team leading technical team of delivering projects.
