Within this weeks Torah reading (Num 22:2-25:9) is found one of the most profound messianic prophesies of the entire bible, connecting back to Gen. 3:15. Using the mouth of a prophet for profit who was hired to pronounce a curse on Israel; instead Balaam begins to prophesy under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of the Almighty (Num 24:2-3). The prophet declares what will happen in the acharit-hayamim, (vs 14) literally meaning the last days. It was this prophecy, together with Micah 5, that led the wise men from the East to follow a star to Bethlehem, hoping to find the one born King of the Jews (Mt 2:1-2). This prophecy is ultimately pointing to the Messiah and the work He will accomplish at the time of his coming. What is the primary accomplishment of the Messiah? He will crush the head of Moab and destroy all the descendants of Sheth. He will possess the territory of His enemies. What does this mean? It is not merely a reference to a geographical location and people group. The Moabites (descendants of Lot) and Edomites (descendants of Esau) were a people who lived to the east of modern-day Israel is what is today the nation of Jordan. Mount Seir was a prominent mountain within the territory of Moab. Likewise, the Amalekites were a people group that lived throughout the greater regions to the east of Israel (Syria, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Saudi Arabia). All of these people groups had and continue to have to this day a deep hatred for the descendants of Jacob. But this prophecy is not talking about God wiping out a people group. We dont wrestle against flesh and blood, and these people are descendants of Abraham, too. Referring back to Gen. 3:15, Messiahs will crush the head of the serpent and possess the territory of His enemy ~ meaning that Messiah will lawfully regain sovereignty over the whole earth. Moab means seed of father and Sheth means children of chaos. Therefore this is referring to Satans seed who is at war with The Seed, which is the Messiah. Yeshua speaks about this in a parable in Matthew 13:24-30 and gives the interpretation in 36-44.
