Woke up to see William Dalrymple being trolled on Twitter by a bunch of racists. Rajiv Malhotra, upset at not being invited to Jaipur despite four bestsellers had managed to gather an army of parochials to abuse William as some sort of white cultural supremacist. With gems like why is a white man directing an Indian lit fest anyway, they created a rabid discourse of Jaipur as a colonial outpost and co director Namita Gokhale as a downtrodden brown woman, slave to Williams imperial doctrines. (Haha) Clearly, none of these people had been to Jaipur or their closed illiberal brains may have benefitted from a dip in that kumbh of ideas. But no, they descended in force to abuse me when I called them on their racism, reviving a ludicrous us vs them binary polarity of identity. I despair.
