Woman leader issues challenge Source: The National, Monday August 19th, 2013 By PETER ESOP WARI A NEWLY-elected woman councillor in Southern Highlands has challenged women to step forward and contest the 2017 general elections. Marlin Morris Warea, 37, from Unjiamap won the Sumia ward one in the lower Mendi LLG of Imbonggu district. She is married to a man from Sumia village in the LLG. She said if women around the country could hold posts previously held by men, then it was time for women to stand up and be counted. “We are equal. I did stand for the councillor post because I knew I had the capability and courage to mingle among men and represent my ward. “Nothing is impossible under the sun. After thousands of years under male dominance, we can build and strengthen a feminine era,” she said. Warea said the country had many outspoken female leaders who previously were silent because of the culture where women were seen as inferior. “In the Highlands region, women have never represented a community during funeral services, moka, compensation or peace mediations. “I am so happy and proud that I have been trusted and given the mandate by my husband and his relatives. I am ready to hear what the community says,” she said.
