Womens Heritage Month: DAY 8 aaysp.org/malkibsi/ Moghitha Alkibsi was born in Yemen and lived in Saudi Arabia with her family prior to marriage. She immigrated to the United States with her husband holding only a junior high degree. Moghitha began to learn English and was able complete her GED via night school courses. She then obtained a Liberal Arts degree from Edward Williams College in New Jersey and took some university classes at Fairleigh Dickenson University in NY. Things slowed down after having children, but she later graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor’s degree in Multicultural Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Development. Ms. Alkibsi worked with Fairfax County Public Schools, in the Family Awareness Programs, as a liaison between Fairfax County and the Middle Eastern Community. She also worked with FEMA, as a crises counselor for the Muslim community in Fairfax County for 4 years. Moghitha participated in creating the Multi-cultural Dialogues, which helped bring groups from various ethnicities and religions together, and is a facilitator and a member of the steering committee for Interfaith Communities for Dialogue (ICD). She founded the Yemeni Women Workshop which provides a venue for women in the community to address various concerns and exercise their talents and abilities to enrich and support each other. Presently, Ms. Alkibsi is a mental health clinician and therapist for Fairfax County Mental Health Community Center.
