Word Of The Day: Christmas Carol The first specifically Christmas hymns appeared in fourth century Rome. In the ninth and tenth centuries, the Christmas Sequence or Prose was introduced in North European monasteries. By the twelfth century, music derived from popular songs introduced something closer to the traditional Christmas carol. Under the influence of Francis of Assisi, Christmas songs performed in native languages emerged In the thirteenth century. Christmas carols in English first appear in a 1426 volume listing twenty five caroles of Cristemas. Carols increased in popularity in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in countries where Protestant churches gained prominence as a result of the Reformation. O Come All Ye Faithful appeared in its current form in the mid-18th century. The first notice in print of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, The First Noel, I Saw Three Ships and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing was in Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern in 1833. The nineteenth century gave rise to other favorites such as Good King Wenceslas and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, an American entry into the Christmas songbook. In the nineteenth and twentieth century many Yuletide compositions were penned with secular themes that are nonetheless referred to generically as carols.
