Probably, the word originated from ‘camouflet’ which means a puff of smoke— something that clouds and makes it difficult to see things. Soldiers dress in order to camouflage themselves and their military equipment using paint, leaves or nets, so that they look like a part of their surroundings. Similarly, a chameleon is popularly known to camouflage by changing its colors to match that of its surroundings.
