Work is progressing steadily on the construction of the first phase of an 800-bed teaching hospital for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi. The first phase which started in March 2012 is expected to be completed this year for use. The hospital entails the construction of facilities such as wards, an outpatient department, antenatal unit, a theatre, demonstration room for specialist doctors and housemen, as well as a canteen. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in five years and is being financed jointly by the government of Ghana and KNUST. The architect in charge of the project, Mr. Jimmy Nkrumah explained that the cost covers the upgrading of 12 selected existing hospitals in the Ashanti region and Brong Ahafo regions as specialist facilities to complement the work of the KNUST Teaching Hospital. The selected hospitals to be upgraded include Asante Agogo Presbyterian Hospital with specialty in Eye centre. Asante Mampong Hospital with specialty in gynecology and ear, nose and throat. Techiman hospital will be upgraded to provide specialty care in gynecology. The KNUST Teaching hospital will become a referral centre for these hospitals to ease the pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Kumasi.
