World Cup marathon leads to tragedy China’s well-documented #WorldCup mania took a tragic turn recently when a 26-year-old woman lost her unborn baby after staying up for four consecutive nights to watch matches, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday. The woman, named Xiaolan, who was around 2-months pregnant, was rushed to a local hospital after she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen during a match between #Germany and #Portugal early Tuesday morning. Broadcasts at midnight, 3 am and 6 am are the only way for people in #China to catch the games live from the other side of the world. Despite emergency medical treatment, doctors were unable to prevent a #miscarriage. The sad news comes shortly after reports emerged that three Chinese soccer fans died after their own marathon World Cup sessions. Chinese netizens on #Sina Weibo were sharply divided over the woman’s actions. Heres a snapshot of the comments.
