World Heritage Site on Eighth Anniversary in Cuba Cienfuegos, July 12 (Prensa Latina) The city of Cienfuegos (central, southern Cuba) is organizing celebrations for the eighth anniversary of its declaration as World Heritage site by UNESCO, including the restoration of several huge works. Architect Iran Millan, Director of the City Curatora´s Office (OCC), told Prensa Latina that again the celebrations will be held at the Jose Marti Park, the original main square, but mainly at the Arch of Triumph, the only monument of its kind in Cuba. Also known as Workers´ Arch, it was the tribute paid by workers in Cienfuegos, 250 km southeast of Havana, to the birth of the Republic, on May 20, 1902. In a meeting in Durban, South Africa, on July 15, 2005, the UNESCO committee in charge of choosing among candidates approved listing the historical center of Cienfuegos as a World Heritage site. Among main works in process of restoration, Architect Millan cited the municipal cemetery, also known as Reina Cemetery, opened in 1838 and the only in Cuba boasting a burial system with vertical tombs. He also mentioned the Cathedral of the Most Pure Conception (1869), the Methodist Church temple (1908) and the Blanco Palace (1871), among others, in some cases involving specialists of a Spanish firm and students of the OCC School of Trades.
