World Tourism Day September 27, 2014 in the World The World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27, 2014. September 27 was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide. World Tourism Day was first celebrated in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October of 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host country each year to act as the Organizations partner in the celebration of World Tourism Day. Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. In 2010, there were over 940 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 6.6% as compared to 2009. International tourism receipts grew to US$919 billion (euro 693 billion) in 2010. (With material from: Wikipedia)
