World wide WINE SHORTAGE Heres the article A world-wide wine shortage is set to strike because the industry is under-supplied by roughly 300 million cases a year — the worst dry spell in 50 years, the research firm Morgan Stanley claims. Wine drinkers across the globe are guzzling more vino than vinyards are producing, thanks to a spike in popularity in the U.S. and China, which has quadrupled its wine consumption in the past five years. At the same time, top wine-making countries such as France, Spain and Italy are producing less due to land use problems, poor harvests and bad weather, the report claims. And it’s going to get worse before it gets better, which could cause the cost of wine to spike, experts say. Wine buffs from the Big Apple called the report the ultimate buzz kill, shuttering at the thought of a world without cheap wine. “It would be horrible, but we can survive without it. New Yorkers are resilient. — there’s always beer or tequila,” said make-up artist Natasha Leibel who was shopping for wine at Trader Joe’s in Union Square. Some sipsters said they’ll get crafty in order to keep drinking nature’s perfect potion. “I’d just make my own. Hopefully there’s no grape shortage,” said Daniel Bencea, 24, who was hauling six bottles of wine in a cart at the shop. Margaret Hart, 39, an educator, joked, “Maybe me and my friends, were responsible for [the shortage.]” She said she couldn’t imagine a world without wine and wouldn’t be put off by higher prices. “I think I would always have the wine. Something else would have to go: The coffee, the latte — maybe I’d get a second job,” she grinned. The report also notes world’s wine consumption has spiked 8 percent since 2000. Wine makers may respond to the supply and demand problem by finding new land for vineyards, wine experts said. “By the time it becomes an issue, I’m sure the wine world will have found a solution,” said Stephanie Teuwen, who runs Teuwen Communications, a marketing firm for food and wine.
