Would you start a fairy tale with And they lived heavily every after? Would you start a murder mystery by revealing the killers name? So why does the Akeidah story start with And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham, and He said to him, Abraham, and he said, Here I am.? Without the word tested, the story would be much more gripping: God would call out to Abraham and give him a shocking order. We would feel Abrahams angst and sadness; but also his fidelity to God and His commands. Tensions would rise as Abraham raises the knife, and just as hes ready to plunge it into Isaacs chest, he hears an angel telling him to sacrifice a ram instead. Then, and only then, do we find out that it was a test, because at that point Abraham is told that he has shown he would not withhold his son, and therefore he will be blessed and his seed will be multiplied and so on. Why did God decide to ruin the story in the first sentence? Or did He? I have some ideas, but first I want to know what YOU think.
