Wrestling: Pierz Season Preview By Patrick Slack, Morrison County Record November 27, 2013 at 9:54 pm He didn’t exactly plan it, but it’s not a bad time to be stepping back into the head coaching role. Mark Jensen, head coach for Pierz from 1988-2006, including the state champion teams in 2004 and 2005, will take back the reins of the program after outgoing coach Simon Waltman moved from Pierz to Little Falls. Jensen inherits a roster that brings back eight wrestlers that won at least 26 matches a year ago to lead the Pioneers to another Section 7A championship. Leading that group for the Pioneers will be a deep senior class that includes Brandon Sullivan, Chris Ortman, Evan Woitalla, Jordon Goebel, Ryley Smude and Curtis Brisk, along with freshmen Brandon Ortman and Brett Kapsner. Also coming back with varsity experience are juniors Cole Brausen and Cody Meyer, sophomores Kolten Eischens and Ted Dehler and freshmen Andrew Tomala, Lane Girtz, Grant Smude, Matt Kummet and Logan Lease. “I think our strength is in our program,” Jensen said. “We have had a great youth program that has fed our program for years. The community has always been very supportive of our athletic endeavors. Our team is a product of that system. “I would expect us to be a contender if we can remain injury free and if we can spread our talent throughout the line-up … a lot of things have to go right to win a championship,” he said. Holdingford, Kimball Area and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa will be top challengers in the Central Minnesota Conference, Jensen said, with Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena and Nash-Kee/Greenway joining the section. Pierz opens the season against Mora, Thursday, Dec. 5.
