Wrote this 13 years ago...thought I would share... Cancelled She woke up that morning, got ready to leave Then made her some coffee, spilled it on her sleeve She went in the bedroom, to change her clothes She looked on her dresser, and there lay a rose Next to the rose, there was a card He told her that night, being away was so hard She opened the card, and inside it said: “Been thinking lately, Can’t get you out of my head. I want you to know that you’re in my heart, And I’ll be with you always, No matter how far apart.” As she read those words, tears filled her eyes She never wanted him to go, She hated goodbyes She lay down on the bed, Lost in her spirit The explosion rang out, So loud she could feel it She knew something was wrong, that sound wasn’t right She wished he was there, Just one more night She turned on the TV, the attack is all she saw The plane crashed where she worked, just down the hall She should have been working, but she was running late Did something keep her from that terrible fate? She called her boyfriend, he wasn’t at home She tried his work, no one answered the phone He should have been there, his plane should be on the ground She called the airport, he was nowhere to be found She checked his flight number, his plane wasn’t there The pain swelled in her throat, it was too much to bear She turned on the the news, she watched it live What was going on? Why hadn’t he arrived? She watched all the replays, again and again At the bottom of the screen, it said it right then His plane was the second, involved in the attack “Maybe they’re wrong,” She thought, “Make them take it back.” But she was certain, that was the plane he was on A few hours ago he held her, and now he is gone She grabbed her keys and ran for the door She drove to the airport to find out more No news was confirmed, what else could she do? Was he involved? No one knew She called his mother, to she is she had word If someone called her, or anything she’d heard His mother said, “Honey, I don’t know what to say. I never expected my son not to come home today.” Those words echoed in and her mind and tore at her heart A new life together, they will never start She hung up the phone and fell to the ground Her thoughts interrupted by a familiar sound Her answering machine had a message that was new She pushed play, she wondered from who? And then in a voice that she needed to hear She listened to him talk, and he felt so near “I just want you to know that I’ll love you forever. And it won’t be long until we are together.” The tears overflowed, she wanted him there She looked at his picture, she couldn’t help but stare And then she saw, in the corner of her eye Him standing there, he said, “Please don’t cry.” He took her hand and he held her tight He said, “I couldn’t leave you all alone here each night.” He got out a box and got down on one knee He said, “I cancelled my flight this morning, baby.” He put the ring on her finger, and asked her to be his wife And in that moment, made sure they were together for life He kissed her forehead and turned off the TV He said, “Sometimes you just know when it’s meant to be.” Sarah R.
